It’s My Party and I’ll Spend If I Want To is the fourth episode in the first season of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

Synopsis[]

After spending $50,000 on an over-the-top tea party, to celebrate her Daughter, Kennedy’s, fourth birthday, Taylor is upstaged by her Husband who brings in an even bigger birthday present. Meanwhile, Camille discusses her marriage while relaxing in her Hawaii home and Lisa receives a heartwarming birthday surprise.

Plot[]

The episode opens with Taylor Armstrong shopping at her favorite jewelers of five years. Her Daughter, Kennedy, is turning four and she loves throwing her the best birthday parties. Four is apparently the appropriate age to buy a girl as special piece of jewelry (like real diamonds) - or at least in Beverly Hills! The jewelers that Taylor is speaking to manage high profile celebrities; like Queen Latifah and Paris Hilton. They have always impressed Taylor and she is looking for another impressive piece. The options look very modern and beautiful. Taylor admits that she was raised as an only child and motherhood, therefore, came as a brand new concept since she has not had many experiences with young kids. Her parents threw her amazing birthday parties when growing up but nothing on this scale for what she is planning for Kennedy. She ends up spending $5,775 just on the jewelry for her and her Daughter to wear.

At home, Lisa Vanderpump is cooking dinner for her Husband, her Daughter, her Daughter’s boyfriend and her "HouseGuest". Lisa admits that despite owning restaurants, her favorite thing to do when it comes to the kitchen is be in her own and cooking for her family - especially her children. She is now an empty nester and thus, the job has dwindled. Since her Daughter, Pandora, is home, she hears her latest news. Pandora is helping one of her closest friends, Lily, plan her wedding which prompts Lisa to question when Pandora and her Boyfriend are due to get married. This jigs Lisa’s memory of getting married at the age of twenty - four years younger than what her Daughter is. Lisa and Ken joke that Lisa was too young to be married when she was. Lisa describes how proud she is of her Daughter as a valedictorian and then continues to discuss what is going on with her Son, Max. She explains that he is eighteen, is living away from home but is responsible with money. Max’s backstory is slightly different to the norm, given he was adopted at six weeks. Lisa and Ken had their Daughter biologically but wanted to adopt more kids (yet stopped at two kids and one adoption since they were both busy with their businesses). Lisa reckons that he has struggled being in a family with empire achievers. She fears that this transpired to him doing what he shouldn’t have been doing as he hung around kids who "smoked pot". As a result, Lisa and Ken sent him to Idaho to stay with his Godmother for his final year of school. Lisa was really upset saying goodbye to him and remembered how destroyed she was in the initial period of his absence.

Over on the other side of the road, Adrienne Maloof is spending time with her family. She explains how motherhood has changed her drastically. She went from being an independent woman who enjoyed single life and the minute that the kids came along, everything changed. Six year old, Gavin, and four years olds, Christian and Colin, are introduced as happy but full-on work. Adrienne admits that running multi-million dollar businesses is nothing in comparison to the job of being a mother. However, Adrienne admits to having help: in a chef, a part-time housekeeper and a nanny. She cannot cook and she doesn’t want to punish her kids or Husband either with her bad cooking skills! As the kids' slight misbehavior is rubbing Paul up the wrong way, Adrienne describes how the differing parenting styles between her and her Husband is obvious: she is more easy going and Paul is not really at all. Adrienne understands that Paul finds it hard to switch off from work and comes home from a long day at work to then playing the Father role which must be tough.

Across Beverly Hills, Camille Grammer is getting ready for her trip to Hawaii. Going on holiday with her are: Jude (her Son), Mason (her Daughter), her two Nannies, her House Manager and her Best Friend, Dedra. However, Camille finds all of the packing and having to go through everything with her House Manager as full on and tiring. Camille admits that she would find it easier if Kelsey was around; she has to do twice as much work as it should and would be. An early flight to Camille sounds like torture but she admits that she is very excited for the break so will accept it. She then goes onto say that she is just that thirty percent busier than the other five 'Housewives'; who all have lives but just aren’t as busy. As Camille is prepping everything through with her House Manager, she states that having good help is really important (after Nicole (the House Manager) confirms that they’ve organized Camille’s hot tub to be heated but not Kelsey’s since he will not be in Hawaii).

Taylor has decided to do a tea-themed birthday party for her four-year-old Daughter. She is walking through everything with her party planner and friend, Dana Wilkey. She describes how she wants this party to be lavish (lady-like and up-scale) with twenty-five little girls having received an invitation and thirty-five of their mothers/Taylor’s friends. Taylor admits that Dana is the perfect person to organize the sophisticated birthday party since she has a lot of experience and knows how to throw great parties. Taylor has invited Adrienne, Lisa Vanderpump and Kyle Richards (who is unable to make the party since she is throwing her youngest Daughter, Portia’s, second birthday party, on the same day). As Taylor is walking through everything with Dana, as is Kyle with her party planner. Kyle admits that Taylor offered to throw a joint birthday party yet the former declined since she’s a control freak and didn’t think it would bode well. The differences in the birthday parties that Kyle and Taylor are organizing are stark: Kyle is paying $3,000 for her party planner while Taylor is paying $12,000, Kyle doesn’t want alcohol at her Daughter’s second birthday party since it isn’t an occasion for adults to get drunk while Taylor wants to celebrate the parents of the little girls at her party and her friends since they deserve some fun and acknowledgement for creating these children; additionally, Taylor wants the kids and adults to sit separately while Kyle wants the kids and their parents to sit together (to make things a real family event). Kyle thinks the costs for birthday parties in Beverly Hills is very competitive and is out of control (with costs extortionate). Portia’s birthday party amounts to $12,000 while Kennedy’s amounts to $60,000.

Having landed in Hawaii, Camille gushes about how good the place smells and feels. She describes Hawaii as her "spiritual refuge" since life in Beverly Hills is very fast-paced and she has big obligations there; especially running several homes. Camille owns a property in a private community (which is a lovely house that contains a giant courtyard, seven bedrooms, a pool and a jacuzzi). Sitting by the pool and watching her kids swim, Camille’s Best Friend and House Manager ask Camille, how it is without Kelsey. Camille states that the first week of Kelsey being away did feel quite nice just to have time for herself. Additionally, she jokes that not having Kelsey in Hawaii with her is quite nice since he is a snorer and usually he has to go into the property’s second master bedroom to sleep. Then, Camille goes onto explain that she finds his absence as empowering but also lonely. While the isolation feels like a loss, it is good for her to make her own decisions; especially since it is all about Kesley and has been for a long time - it is now morphing into something different for Camille. Privately, Camille explains that she dedicated her life (the past twelve years) to keeping Kelsey sober when he left rehab (the time that she first met him). Best Friend, Dedra (who has known her for years and years), says that she noticed Camille lost her sense of self, lost her spark and gave up what she wanted in life to look after Kelsey’s sobriety; became no longer a go getter. However, hopes that this sense of self can now be reignited.

Back in Beverly Hills, Lisa is having her birthday lunch; surrounded by her nearest and dearest but is missing one of her brood - her Son, Max, who she thinks is coming home to Beverly Hills soon but not quite yet. Despite this, Pandora and Ken surprise Lisa by bringing Max out; who is joining them for lunch and is staying for a few days to tour round The Musical Institute (where Max is potentially seeking to continue his education). Lisa is blown away with having Max at her birthday lunch and describes how she had such a special relationship with Max. She states how he knows that he is loved no differently since he is adopted and not biological (says emotionally that physically mothering a child doesn’t bear the importance as actually raising a child and being their Mother). Lisa admits that she is worried about whether Hollywood will trigger Max to slip back into his rebellious ways and questions whether it is the right place for him to thrive. Lisa announces fondly to the table how his first words were: "I Can’t!" which she still finds ironic considering he has already achieved so much in his life. Max gets out his guitar at lunch, after being prompted by his parents, and seems somewhat keen to take a tour around The Musical Institute, in the coming days.

Back to Hawaii, Camille is still in her "spiritual refuge" and is in her hot tub with her friends, Carl and Dedra. They both sing her praises as the former calls her "eye candy" and the latter refers to Camille and Husband, Kelsey, as "very generous people". Camille admits that she feels blessed to be in the fortunate position that she is in to give back to people (which she lives for, makes her feel complete and enriches her soul). She references how she has helped out both Carl and Debra before (elaborating with the story of how she put up Dedra and her Husband in one of her and Kelsey’s home and lent them one of their cars in Los Angeles while Dedra’s Husband was not working).

After the delightful birthday lunch and on a new day in Beverly Hills, the day has arrived for Lisa, Ken and Max to tour The Musical Institute which is a mixture of excitement but nerves for Lisa. She admits that going from living in the English countryside and France to then Los Angeles could’ve been a mistake in the sense of raising Max (since Hollywood is comprised of bad influences). As they tour around the institute, Lisa asks the tour guide whether there is a problem in their student lodgings with drugs. The tour guide insists that they have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to drugs and alcohol and there is no room for "rift raft" which quashes some of Lisa’s worries. Max is asked to demonstrate his guitar skills to the tour guide who is impressed by his motor skills (with his fingers and his timing) but admits that Max is going to have to put in the work to become a professional. On the way back home, Lisa admits that she wants to give Max what she was given when young which was a chance to chase her acting dreams. She promises that as long as Max shows commitment, she will support his passion (and will continue to steer him in the right direction even if he slips off the straight and narrow).

On the dual birthday parties day, Kim Richards has moved into her new home (which she has just found after being under the gun to get out of her old rental property and it was quite a time crunch). Kim admits that despite her Sister’s reservations and doubts at her capability of making her own decisions for her and her kids, she can do it and will prove the doubters wrong. As Kim is getting to know the place’s amenities, she struggles to work out the cooker (which her Daughters, Brooke and Kimberly, are on hand to help). In the final couple of hours before Portia’s birthday party starts, Kyle is frantically rushing around (trying to get as many things done as possible and multitasking; doing too many things at once). She admits that even though she pledges not too each time they come around, she will lose sleep over a kids' birthday party. Kyle rings up Kim to see if her Sister can be of any help as the preparations are a little overwhelming which Kim turns down since she is in the process of moving into her new place and has trucks turning up left-right-and-center. As Kim promises to attempt to get there earlier than the party’s starting time, Kyle finds it hard to understand what Kim is saying since she feels Kim is speaking too loudly and it is muffled so ends up putting the phone down quickly as Kyle’s doorbell rings (one of the parties' equipment sets has turned up).

In Houdini Estate (where Taylor’s Daughter’s birthday party is taking place), Taylor’s dream is becoming reality. She speaks highly of her Best Friend, Dwight, and as does he of her (vice versa); who commends her for being a very dedicated Mother. Kennedy is introduced to the tea-party setting which proves a little overwhelming for her. Taylor endeavors to convince Kennedy to have some photos taken of her by the decoration yet she refuses too. However, that does not stop Taylor from being photographed as she can’t pass up such a great opportunity (especially when having paid for a photographer). Elsewhere, still in Hawaii, Camille is paddle boarding with her Best Friend which she finds very empowering and freeing yet it proves to be a full body workout and she leaves the sea feeling extremely hungry and in need of a hamburger!

In Kyle’s backyard, Kyle is jumping on a child’s bouncy castle (with the kids) as Portia’s birthday party is in full swing. She admits that these parties release her inner child that she once was and it provides an opportunity to see friends that she sees less and less of since they all lead hectic lives; especially now being Moms! Kyle won’t see Adrienne (who she invited but will be at Kennedy’s birthday party) but will see Lisa (who is first headed to Kennedy’s and then onto Portia’s). As Lisa is at Houdini Estate, she questions the humongous celebration of a little girl turning four and does find it all too much/over the top. She draws the comparison by referencing her children’s birthday parties in the English countryside which were nowhere near as extravagant as Kennedy’s. Taylor points out, privately after absorbing Lisa’s reaction, that she is a different kind of person than Lisa where she’d rather throw a huge party to celebrate her Daughter while Lisa would rather buy twenty pairs of shoes. Adrienne arrives at Kennedy’s birthday party and is blown away with how well Taylor has done everything (always thinks Taylor is a fabulous hostess since she is used to entertaining). However, she finds these parties are more geared towards the adults and doing these ever year is a foolish idea. As Russell joins the party, he chats to Taylor’s Best Friend, Dwight, but Dwight admits that he and Russell have never connected on a personal level since Russell is hard to get to know; they just end up talking about business. Taylor feels that Russell doesn’t really command the party yet she is impressed that Russell is staying as long at the party as he is since he is a "guy’s guy" and wouldn’t usually fancy hanging around the women.

Back to Kyle’s backyard, Kyle is a little putout that Kim arrives after the party start time and didn’t help with preparations. However, this does not turn into an argument/fight or even a disagreement and is more seen as a jovial topic between the Sisters (Kyle is so focussed on making the day great for Portia). Elsewhere, as photos are being taken of the event, Mauricio comments on how amazing Kyle is a Mother (which he feels that she has a natural instinct from birth); he references how much of a tight family they are. Mauricio’s Mother, Estella, is in attendance to wish her Granddaughter a happy birthday. Then, Lisa shows up and admits to feeling like she was more going home when going to Kyle’s Daughter’s birthday party (has a different energy to Kennedy’s). Lisa teases Kim about her time-keeping; which Kim jokingly snaps to say that she is usually prompt but has only ever been late to this party (due to moving) and late by half an hour to Villa Blanca (when the 'Housewives' had lunch recently). As Portia’s birthday rages on in high spirits, Kyle admits that even though Portia will not remember the occasion, she views this as a family event and celebration which it has truly been. As Portia’s birthday cake is bought out, the "Happy Birthday" song is sung in Spanish; which Kyle asked Mauricio to lead since she feels it is important for her kids to learn their roots (Spanish is the language that Mauricio mainly spoke when growing up). Lisa feels similar to Kyle for the passion that she has for her children - as she sees Kyle looking adoringly at Portia, she feels that she wants to have young children all over again and re-live the young special bond that she had with her children.

Back in Houdini Estate, Kennedy’s birthday cake is bought out and a song is sung that has been written and dedicated to her. Despite Kennedy feeling embarrassed and not being enthused when the song is being sung, Taylor predicts that Kennedy will feel pretty special when looking back on this as she gets older. When Taylor was young, her Grandmother gave her a diamond ring and she has remembered it fondly ever since so wants the same to be done for Kennedy. Taylor gifts Kennedy with the items that she purchased at the jeweler’s; yet it does not prompt the reaction that Taylor was hoping for from Kennedy as she isn’t exactly that impressed. Right in the middle of it all, Russell surprises Kennedy (and Taylor!) with a gift. Out comes a puppy that Russell has bought for Kennedy. Taylor feels really frustrated since last time that she and Russell spoke about pets, they agreed to no dogs. Taylor is annoyed that he overshadowed Taylor’s big moment with Kennedy and the gift that she gave plus feels annoyed that he bought a dog but will only leave it when going back to work and let others care for the dog. As the party is over, Kennedy is seen walking with her parents and gushing over her new dog.
