The Art of War is the sixth episode in the first season of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.
Synopsis[]
Still in New York, the women are all reeling over the past evenings meltdown and Kim continues to add fuel to the fire by refusing to stand up for her Sister. It's the day of Kelsey's premiere and everyone's nerves are fraught, but it's a glamorous evening and it seems like the women do their best to sweep their problems under the rug – at least while they are in New York.
Plot[]
Picking up from where the last episode left off, five of the 'Housewives' are in New York City having dinner and Kyle Richards has just told Camille Grammer that she is a "f***ing liar". Reeling from the accusation, Kim Richards and Taylor Armstrong both drop their mouths in shock. Camille and Kyle exchange more heated jabs as they hash out their very much ongoing disagreement. Kyle believes that Camille believes what she is accusing Kyle of but Camille insists that there was no misinterpretation (still states that Kyle asked why anyone would be interested in Camille without Kelsey being around) between them and that she is not a liar. Since Camille claims that she is not a liar, Kyle predicts that Camille hallucinates. Kyle admits to being scared of Camille since she has the ability to snap and turn with the snap of two fingers. On the verge of exiting, Camille states that she is not going to be baited into any argument and she is surprised at how attacked she feels. Kyle endeavors to get Kim to confirm that what Camille is saying Kyle said is not true. Taken aback and under pressure, Kim wants to remain out of the drama and not upset either side so refuses to step up to the plate and defend her Sister (since she does later admit that she can see why Camille could’ve misinterpreted Kyle’s question yet what Camille alleges Kyle to have said is not true). Lisa Vanderpump questions where Camille has heard of anyone labelling her "insecure". Camille then asks the table who has labelled her insecure other than Kyle; which Kim owns up to and says that she and Taylor hypothesized that Camille could be insecure when they were at the airport ahead of flying to New York. Taylor, visibly annoyed, is confused as to why Kim is making out as if they had a discussion at the airport about Camille being insecure; since it was Kim who suggested it and Taylor just nodded while not giving an opinion about whether she believed Camille to be insecure or not. In a confessional, Camille admits that she heard from Taylor that Lisa had been trying to get Taylor to say that Camille was insecure yet she doesn’t bring this up at the table. Lisa tries once again to question what happened between the 'Housewives' splitting off twenty minutes ahead of (leaving Camille and Taylor in the latter’s suite) to now. Camille decides to leave as the conversation is just going round in circles, she apologizes that Kyle feels a certain way about her and walks off; feeling abused.
As soon as Camille has left the table, Kim decides to question why Taylor denied saying Camille was insecure. Taylor, having not on-camera suggested Camille is insecure, snaps at Kim and tells her not to "f***ing drag me into this ‘cause I guarantee that you’re barking up the wrong tree here". Taylor feels Kim is putting words in her mouth and hasn’t been involved in the contentious conversations between Kyle and Camille; so wants to remain out of them. Taylor says that she is going to "pull Kim aside and pull some Oklahoma on her a**". Taylor tells Kim not to upset her while Kim comes right back at Taylor and says not to upset her"p*** her off" either. As Taylor tells Kim to bring it on, she asks Kyle why Kim is trying to start something. Kyle, tired from all of the drama of the night, pleads with her Sister to just stop. Kyle starts crying and says she doesn’t know how to prove her innocence when someone is so hell-bent on saying that Kyle said something that she never did. Lisa, in a bid to comfort Kyle, says that this isn’t worth getting upset over. Drama unravels even more though as Kim tells Kyle not to cry anymore (since Camille made Kyle look stupid and Kyle is as much to blame for what just took place as everyone at the table). Lisa defends Kyle for defending herself and Kyle questions why Kim did not defend her Sister anymore or clarify what she knows not to be true - which is what Camille alleges Kyle to have said. As Kim tells Kyle to stay in her place, Kyle says that Kim is taking this too far and what she is doing is not OK. Lisa tugs at Kyle’s arm to break up the argument and get everyone away from the dinner table. Lisa thinks Kim should’ve stepped in to defend her Sister. Kyle says that Kim isn’t being much of a Sister during the dinner and Kim says she thinks that of Kyle all the time. As they leave dinner, Kim says that she wants to go back home and not be in New York anymore.
Back in a calmer Beverly Hills, Adrienne Maloof is getting herself and the family ready to attend a gathering; which is paying tribute to her Uncle. As Paul is helping Adrienne with a necklace, she is a little snappy as she is finding him slow (not only with the help of her necklace but also getting himself ready and their kids) and questions why he is not that efficient at putting a necklace around her when he is a surgeon. In a confessional, Adrienne highlights how family is always first despite really wanting to have attended the New York trip with the other 'Housewives'. As Adrienne rallies the troops and gets the kids in the car, she shouts at how this is a special day for her and she doesn’t want to be late so is unsure why Paul isn’t more organized and is dilly-dallying. As Adrienne locks up the house, Paul honks the horn jokingly (as in to say hurry up) yet insists that they are not late. Again in confessionals, Paul says that he has bickered with Adrienne since the day that they met while Adrienne says that bickering is natural after eight years of marriage.
After the previous explosive night and during the day of Kelsey’s premiere, Kyle and Lisa are headed to see the fashion designer, Christina Makowsky, to look for outfits to wear for the Broadway premiere. On the limousine ride over, Kyle confesses not to have slept well after the drama and is weighing up whether to attend the evening premiere since she will not be welcomed or wanted. Lisa, also exhausted, says that she believes Kyle should attend and just walk up to Camille during the premiere and say that they should gloss over it for the night and re-visit their issues in Los Angeles. Kyle also has the drama of last night with Sister, Kim, weighing heavily on her. She admits to having rung her in the morning but not getting a response (yet did not leave a voicemail). As they enter the designer’s shop, they’re both thrilled with their first try-ons and purchase both for the night (Kyle is unsure though whether it shall be worn that night). While at the shop, Kyle heads out to the balcony (with a pit in her stomach) and rings Camille to try and smoothen things over ahead of the premiere. The call is forwarded to voicemail which leaves Kyle expressing her intentions for the night and gives an apology for how things had gone down the night prior.
Back in Beverly Hills, Ken is seen walking around the garden with his dogs - cleaning the pool and trying to keep himself busy as he misses the company of his Wife, Lisa. Privately, Lisa admits that Ken is not used to being without her and she reckons Ken will be running around like a headless chicken since he won’t know what to do with himself. Lisa and Ken both separately divulge on how Ken had wild ways ahead of meeting Lisa; which Lisa jokingly admits to be anxious that he will revert back to while she is away. Lisa, ahead of getting married at the age of twenty-one, was called a "lion tamer" by her friends for managing to make Ken settle down. Ken describes their dynamic as him "wearing the pants, Lisa running the household and therefore, he is unable to go to the fridge for a sandwich!".
In Camille’s New York apartment, she is being glammed up by her friends, Joe and DD (who she calls her real friends). She is relieved to be away from her "so-thought friends" and describes how she has bonded with these particular friends since they’re all survivors. Her friends are in disbelief about what happened to her; as Camille relays the events of the night prior. Camille explains that people would’ve thought Kyle had a thing (a crush) for her. DD says that girls tend to have major jealousy issues with Camille; which is what this situation sounds like too; to DD. Camille says that she will not let Kyle be crass again ahead of the premiere night but is not the sort of person who disinvites someone to a premiere party as a result of inappropriate behavior. DD jokes how Camille and Kelsey will not be calling Kyle’s Husband, Mauricio, for homes anytime soon. Kyle’s voice message is played and both Camille and DD weigh in on the voicemail. Camille confesses that would be happy not to see Kyle again and DD calls the apology "pathetic".
Out for lunch, Kim, Kyle, Lisa and Taylor are all sat down together for lunch and things are a little tense between the former and the latter plus the two formers after the drama of the night before. Kim pulls out some gifts, which are from her jewelry line which was founded out of the inspiration of her Mom and created on her Mom’s birthdate (which was yesterday). Kyle gets the first piece as she is her Sister (Kyle is appreciative but finds it hard to thank her after how she was treated last night). Taylor and Lisa both then receive the bracelets which Lisa is very appreciative of but Taylor wonders what the meaning is behind this: an olive branch but without an apology? The ladies discuss tonight’s plans and Kyle raises her doubts about attending the premiere. If she goes, she knows she’ll feel awkward and unwelcome. Yet, if she doesn’t go, she will put the nail in the coffin with any type of patch-up with Camille. Lisa thinks Kyle should go and address the wound once back in Beverly Hills. Kyle says that she is usually the one that witnesses fights between friends and doesn’t understand how friends get to this place; but now she is in the middle of one. Kim says that Camille did misinterpret exactly what Kyle said; which prompts Kyle to ask why Kim couldn’t have revealed this last night to help back her Sister up. Kim thinks she always receives the blame for everything but she does not like conflict and could not get a word in edgewise; something Kyle refutes as Kyle literally put Kim on the spot during the dinner. Kim later reveals that she is also having doubts about attending the premiere as she doesn’t want anymore drama. Kyle questions if this is Kim now showing solidarity and support for her as opposed to showing it last night. Lisa attempts to convince the Sisters to turn up to the event. Kyle admits that she is on the verge of snapping and she doesn’t want Kim to push her.
Getting ready for the night, Camille sends Kyle a text and said that Kyle should come along and enjoy the show; confirming that she is going. While also getting glammed up, Taylor rings Adrienne (which goes to voicemail), she checks in on Adrienne (saying that she misses her and knows that Adrienne is not having an easy day today). Taylor thinks that last night would’ve gone differently had Adrienne, who is usually a voice of reason, could’ve diffused the situation. Adrienne listens to the voicemail with Paul which she finds sweet but surprising to hear Taylor’s update about the drama. While she is missing not being in New York, she is relieved to have been with her Mother (who really needed her). The married couple discuss Paul’s decision to go out on a jolly with the other 'HouseHusbands' last night when Adrienne would’ve expected Paul to have been there for her and her Mother. She makes her disappointment with him clear regarding his lack of support which prompts Paul to query what he supposed to do as Paul claims Adrienne didn’t let onto him or make him aware of how the previous night’s gathering was going to be. Adrienne questions how Paul would feel if things were reversed. Paul apologises but is not allowed to say anything to defend himself. Adrienne is a little annoyed as he tries to make amends with a (side-)kiss and cuddle.
Also in Beverly Hills, both Russell and Mauricio are looking after their kid(s). While Russell has never stayed home alone with Kennedy during a weekend, she is excited to give them their quality time but nervous about what Kennedy will eat. As Russell is unsure about what to make his Daughter for lunch, he offers her pizza but she opts for soup. As he asks her whether he is supposed to put soup in the oven, he jokes Kennedy is hurting his feelings as she says she is unlikely to like his cooking. Mauricio, on the other hand, is quite equipped with looking after the kids. Playing in the pool with Sophia and her friend plus his youngest, Portia, he is also managing to joke with his eldest, Alexia, about her "liking" a guy. Kyle says that she is nervous leaving the girls yet Mauricio makes an amazing Dad, Husband and is hot; a bonus for her!
On the way to the premiere, Camille shares a limousine ride with DD. DD says that girls have been jealous of Camille in the past; which Camille does agree upon. This comes with judgement without knowledge and causes pre-conceived notions by other women of Camille. Camille reckons that the situation with Kyle is no different: she is just jealous of her. As they pull up at the premiere. Camille is walking the Red Carpet and admits to quite liking the yelling from the cameramen. One of the reporters asks Camille whether she has ever seen her Husband in Drag before (which she will see for the premiere night) which she neither confirms nor denies. Camille’s Best Friend, Nick, is in attendance; which is a huge boost that she feels she needed. Camille feels confident seeing Kyle again since she knows she is in the right. Camille also says that while she was verbally assaulted by Kyle last night, she will not be friends with someone who exhibits that sort of childish behavior.
As Kyle, Kim, Lisa and Taylor all arrive (after they all form a pact not to re-visit any drama tonight), Lisa feels anxious about the awkwardness of how the group left it with Camille. She goes straight for a hug with Camille when they arrive in a bid to squash any tension. She does mention how she has not been to many Broadway shows but is used to many Red Carpets back in Beverly Hills. Half of the Red Carpets focus on what people are wearing; which Lisa loves! As Lisa goes straight in for a hug with Camille, Kyle forges a little wave but admits to finding it so uncomfortable and questions why she has come (also enjoys the Red Carpet yet is nervous about who and what is coming from each direction).
The performance begins and during the intermission, the ladies all take a bathroom break. Kim is left behind by four of the ’Housewives' as Camille explains that in Broadway, the intermission is always quick so you have to be speedy when going to the bathroom. Post the show, Camille congratulates her Husband in his dressing room. He is appreciative and agrees to get signatures from his co-stars for the 'Housewives' to take back with them as souvenirs. At the After Party, Lisa thinks her nerves will go away as the night has gone smoothly so far. However, before she speaks too soon, she maintains that it is probably safer to say nothing - no mention of insecure, insignificant or invisible. Kyle is feeling worried about seeing Kelsey after the argument since he’d want to protect his Wife. Camille admits that she is upset after Kyle’s hurtful comments but she is not going to waste any of her time thinking of a petty argument. As the ladies are sat down, one of Camille’s friends ask for her thoughts on Kelsey’s stage kiss - which she admits that she felt fine and demonstrates that she can do it too with a female friend. Kyle looks a little bemused as Camille does this. Later on in the evening, Kelsey comes and sits with the 'Housewives'. Kelsey admits that marriage only needs two people who are decent and nice; which Camille has certainly proved she is since she has been through a lot of travail. Kyle is surprised at how gracious nice Kelsey is - the opposite of what she found Camille to be the night before. The ladies dance the night away and have a good time…drama free.
On the way back home, all of the 'Housewives' (bar Camille) who were in New York, travel back in a limousine. They discuss how late they went to bed last night. Kyle envisaged spending some time in her hotel room - relaxing and watching a movie. However, she never got the time to do so since she was occupied outside the whole time or reeling from the events of the first night. All the ladies share how much they cannot wait to get back to their families. Kyle admits to finding relationships with Sisters strange as they can argue and make-up so easily. Kim says that the group’s latest trip to Las Vegas was a big eye-opener for her and says how hard it is being alone; without a companion. Feels something is missing in her life and says that she got emotional at the time; thinks it is time to start finding someone and settling down. Kim volunteers for the three girls in the limousine to pick a man for Kim to go to dinner with. Lisa asks what the age range is for Kim and she jokes between twenty-five and seventy. Taylor confesses that she is treading lightly with Kim and is not going to set Kim up with anyone due to the state of their friendship.
All of the 'Housewives' are now back home and Lisa decides to invite Adrienne around to fill her in on the eventful trip and hear how she is doing amid her Uncle’s passing. Adrienne is late (despite living right across the street from Lisa) but Lisa is looking forward to seeing her. As Adrienne arrives, Lisa greets Adrienne warmly and passes her condolences to her. Lisa waited for Adrienne to call since she knows how busy it is when you are grief-stricken. Adrienne admits to being tired but is keen to hear Lisa’s news (after having heard from Taylor about all of the New York drama). Cedric, Lisa’s "HouseGuest", joins the pair for tea, and Lisa relays all of the events to both Adrienne and Cedric. Adrienne is flawed about the amount of drama that went on between the girls. She thinks that you have to move on sometimes and just agree to disagree. Lisa theorizes that Camille and Kyle’s fallout could be merely down to a clash of personalities. Lisa is unsure about whether Camille is holding onto her drama with Kyle but one thing is for sure: Adrienne, Cedric and Lisa all think Camille and Kyle should have a lunch, yet probably won’t, to solve their issues.
At Camille’s, while reading The Art of War, Nick comes through the kitchen door and has arrived to chat about the trip and everything that happened - digest it all. Firstly, they discuss the play which Nick admits his surprise at how much of a good singing voice that Kelsey has. Camille thanks him and says that she went back the night after Nick and the 'Housewives' came along, to re-watch. Their attention then turns onto the friendship drams that Camille experienced during the trip with Camille relaying her version of the story to Nick. She refers to Kyle as acting like a "homeless woman" and someone "who had her eyes nearly popping out of her head with steam". Camille says Kyle’s apology was insincere and was only filled with her trying to say that she did not say anything along the lines that Camille says she did and it is all a misunderstanding. Camille says if Kyle is jealous, she needs to move past it since women have got to support women. When asked by Nick, Camille admits that Kelsey was not happy about the situation after he heard about the debacle. Seeing as Mauricio works for the Grammers as a realtor, Camille decides to distinguish the pecking order between Mauricio and Kelsey. Camille laughs as she states how a local realtor compared to an A-List celebrity; whom has won many awards and is respected in his community, is a lot lower down. Kelsey and Camille are going to look for business elsewhere as they will not continue with Mauricio after what Kyle did to Camille. Camille says that during the premiere night, she wanted to attack Kyle back since she is miserable and not a nice person; however, if the experience taught Camille one thing, it’s that she values her friendships with the men in her life.

Continuity[]
- Lisa Vanderpump’s defense of her good friend, Kyle Richards, is seen again for the second time. First, in It’s My Party and I’ll Spend If I Want To; when having a chat with Camille Grammer (who was repeating a conversation that she had, had with Kyle that made her feel uncomfortable) and then in a bid to diffuse a mini-argument between Kyle and Kim Richards (when Kim sternly tells Kyle off for crying as she believes that Kyle is very much to blame (alongside everyone at the table) for behaving badly at the dinner they’ve just had, Lisa interjects and says that Kyle had a right to defend herself.
- The up-and-down relationship between Sisters, Kim and Kyle, plays out during this episode since Kyle feels Kim’s not stepping up to the plate like a Sister should do to protect their Sister.
- Adrienne Maloof getting frustrated with Husband, Paul, is a recurring theme and has been practically featured in all episodes thus far of the show. They both admit to bickering (Adrienne says this is normal since she has been married for eight years; Paul admits their bickering has been from the day they first met).
- The feud continues between Camille and Kyle; as awkwardness is felt between the pair at the premiere of Kelsey Grammer’s new broadway show. They both chat to others about their feelings towards each other and about the situation that has been created.
- Camille’s inflated view of her Husband is seen in confessionals during this episode as she labels him as "on top of the pecking order"; comparing Kyle’s Husband, Mauricio, to hers.
- Kim admits to feeling a sense of longing for a companion since she references being left alone in her hotel room while all the other 'Housewives' went off to their own rooms to be with their Husbands; which took place in the episode, Plenty of Baggage.
