After the success of The Real Housewives of Melbourne, Australian TV channel Arena began casting in Sydney in early 2016.[1] The series was officially announced on May 16, 2016 via the series's official Facebook page.[2] The cast was announced on July 22, 2016.[3] According to Foxtel, the women are "charismatic and engaging" as well as familiar with "the extravagant, stylish and cosmopolitan lifestyle of Sydney."[4] Filming wrapped in December 2016.[5]
Cast[]
Seven housewives are featured during the first season of The Real Housewives of Sydney. They are:
Krissy Marsh, according to Arenatv.com.au, "The quintessential Australian girl; Krissy is loyal, generous, outgoing, kind and not afraid to tell it like it is. She loves the Sydney lifestyle, but also remains connected to her down to earth, country town upbringing in Queensland. Krissy moved to Sydney at 18 for her modelling career and never looked back. Krissy is happily married to Johnny and together they have 3 children, 13 year old Billy, 11 year old Nicco and 8 year old Milana. She has a great love for Shanghai, having lived there for two years with her family. Her husband Johnny lives in Shanghai but commutes to Sydney frequently. Since returning to Sydney, Krissy is concentrating on working with her foster care charity – The Wishing Well, doing up her Double Bay apartment and is enjoying being back with her very tight knit family, particularly her sisters who were all models and definitely know what life in the spotlight is like. Sydney life to Krissy is all about the water and having fun. Krissy likes to be the boss and admits her greatest weakness is sticking her nose where it shouldn’t go."[6]
Nicole O'Neil, according to Arenatv.com.au, "Entrepreneur and former Miss Australia, Nicole O’Neil is smart and beautiful making her the ultimate Sydney Housewife. Born in Dubai to a Swedish mother and Lebanese father, Nicole grew up in Sydney, went on to achieve a Bachelor of Commerce and married her childhood sweetheart Adam. Their daughters, Nawal 12 and Neve 10, have enjoyed a global upbringing, raised in both London and Dubai. However, it’s Sydney that’s captured Nicole’s heart, and wherever their extensive travels take them, the family always find themselves returning home to Australia. Nicole was raised in an incredibly tight-knit family, and it’s her fond memories of childhood celebrations that eventually inspired Nicole’s career. In 2002, Nicole founded planning and production start-up, Pret-a-Party, specialising in creating lavish, unforgettable events in Sydney and London. But Nicole’s favourite events are the ones she spends at home with her nearest and dearest. A born entertainer, there’s nothing that makes Nicole happier than playing hostess to her family and closest friends – aside from shopping, which Nicole believes could have been her calling, if only it were a competitive sport. Whether she’s at work or with her family, Nicole is highly driven and always on the go. She also admits she’s very impulsive and passionate; a force to be reckoned with."[7]
Athena X Levendi, according to Arenatv.com.au, "Spiritual, eccentric and attractive; Athena is a painter, sculptor and jewellery designer. Australian born, she grew up in Athens only to return to Australia at the age of 20. She is married to an Australian Greek jewellery designer, Panos, who owns and runs Levendi Jewellers. Together they raise three children in their beautiful Bellevue Hill home – teenage son Alexander, 16, and their younger children Pavlos, 12 and Myrella, 9 years-old. When she is not holding solo exhibitions showcasing her paintings and sculptures, she can be found adding her creative input at Levendi Jewellers working alongside her brother-in-law Mike Levendi, as one of the designers. Around three years ago Athena had a spiritual awakening after her mother passed away. As a result, she lives her life purely in the ‘now’ and will not look back or too far forward. She says she isn’t very sentimental as a result, and doesn’t keep too many photos or memories around her and her family home."[8]
Lisa Oldfield, according to Arenatv.com.au, "Opinionated, provocative and passionate; Lisa is a media commentator, seasoned world traveller, astute business woman and savvy tech guru. Married to well known former politician and radio broadcaster David Oldfield, Lisa is no stranger to controversy and being in the spotlight. Lisa is also a mother of two young boys, Harry, 6 and Bertie (Albert), 4 and lives in Sydney’s Northern Beaches with her family. A career woman, Lisa loves a challenge and showcasing the best Australia has to offer. As a Director of Australian Presence, Lisa both helps international companies establish a presence in the Australian market and attracts foreign investment to help grow local businesses. A passionate advocate for improving family fertility choices, Lisa is heavily involved with the Australian Egg Bank, a storage and donation facility for human embryos. Known to put her money where her mouth is, Lisa recently donated her own eggs to a close friend, resulting in a very happy and healthy baby boy for a family who had otherwise exhausted their fertility options. Lisa’s love of animals is reflected in her broad work for animal charities and her impressive menagerie of pets, which include two rescue dogs, three horses, eight chickens, two snakes and a parrot. Lisa loves enjoying a bottle of champagne and a cheese platter on her family boat and has a number of passions including cooking, horse-riding and a particular love for target shooting that developed through spending time at her parent’s farm growing up. A lover of loyalty, travel and honesty, Lisa is a passionate person that is not afraid to go against the status quo, describing herself as being provoked by political correctness."[9]
Victoria Rees, according to Arenatv.com.au, "Funny, outspoken and carefree; entrepreneur Victoria is single for the first time in her life and loving it, living on the beachfront of Bondi Beach. She considers herself to be Mum to 2 children, 13 year old son Austin and her English Staffordshire Terrier Lola. She spends her spare time lunching with girlfriends, entertaining and cooking for friends and family in her Bondi home, walking Lola, paddle boarding and working out with her trainer. Victoria’s entrepreneurial spirit and knack for identifying new ideas and trends has seen her incredibly successful in business creating Bondi Beach’s first juice bar, a glamorous beauty salon in Woollahra, an Interior Design consultancy and property portfolio, before teaming up with Wrinkles Schminkles a range of non-invasive Medical Grade Silicone Pads that literally work overnight to smooth and treat wrinkles on those parts of your body that do act their age. Apart from a vodka lime and soda, Victoria says her greatest weakness is her son and that she jumps into things too quickly and she doesn’t suffer fools."[10]
Matty Samaei, according to Arenatv.com.au, " Smart, sassy and fun; Matty is not afraid to speak her mind and tell it like it is. A renowned Beauty Expert, Matty Samaei is the owner of The Medispa by Matty, an elite practice located in Double Bay. With a career spanning in excess of 20 years, Matty is one of Australia’s most experienced & highly respected non-surgical cosmetic nurses. Immigrating to Australia at age 12 with her Persian family, Matty’s life has not always been so opulent. Growing up in a modest, humble way, she believes her current success is an amalgamation of sheer hard work, dedication, confidence and the spirit of never, ever giving up. Matty lives in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs with her fiancé Michael Stathakis and her two young daughters. In line with her Forever Young brand, she is committed to a healthy lifestyle of eating well exercising and exploring the latest beauty and anti-aging treatments. She finds time for all her passions – shopping, travelling to the great cities of the world like Paris, meeting new people, and experiencing new places. Her personal life motto? Life is short so seize every opportunity that comes your way."[11]
Melissa Tkautz, according to Arenatv.com.au, "Actress, model, singer; Melissa is a triple threat. With a career spanning over three decades in Australia’s entertainment industry, she has appeared on many TV shows, over 80 magazine covers and is an ARIA award winner! She is also a mother of two young children Ayla, 7 and Cuba, 3, that she raises in her Northern Beaches home with her husband. Melissa is a passionate charity worker, supporting many campaigns including ‘anti-bullying’ and ‘Marriage Equality.’ Although being extremely busy, balancing being a mother, wife and having a career, shes does manage to wander down to the Opera Bar and enjoy a late-lunch and champagne with the girls! Melissa says she is not high maintenance but her husband would definitely disagree. Melissa’s upcoming feature film ‘Boar’ with John Jarrett and Hugh Sheridan will be released in 2017. Melissa is also set to release a new single as well as launching her soy candle range under the brand name Mel.T."[12]

Cancellation[]
The series cancellation was officially confirmed by Foxtel executive Brian Walsh on February 5, 2019, almost two years after the first season's finale aired.[14] According to Walsh, the reasoning over the cancellation was that the show "went too far", as “a lot of the women in this show were nasty for nasty’s sake and have no redeeming features,” stated by the Foxtel executive.[15] The show was also reported as "too mean" for U.S. audiences as it was reported Bravo refused to air the show despite syndicating The Real Housewives of Melbourne.[16]
