Upgrading Has Nothing To Do With You Honey is the third episode in the first season and the third episode ever produced of The Real Housewives of Orange County. It premiered on April 4, 2006 , to an audience of N/A million live viewers.
Synopsis[]
On Bravotv.com: "Jeana, Matt and Colton accompany Shane to a college in Arizona, where he tries out for the coach of the baseball team. Left home alone, Kara passes the time by spending money. Kimberly sets off for a girls-only weekend in Palm Springs and things get wild. Still trying to land Brent's business, Slade maneuvers an invitation with Jo to Brent's house for drinks. Jo plays along and bonds with Brent's wife, Cyndi, but later realizes she wants more for her own life. In preparation for their big convention in New Orleans, Vicki & Lauri get a home treatment of Botox. Lauri worries about leaving her daughter, Ashley, in charge of her house, while Vicki worries that Lauri isn't dedicated enough to her career. While Lauri's away, Ashley breaks the rules and has a party. In New Orleans, Vicki and Lauri bond over a shared childhood experience."[1]
Summary[]
Vicki and Lauri get ready to go to the insurance conference in New Orleans. Lauri arranged a home visit botox appointment for Vicki and herself. Vicki is being dramatic while Briana and Michael spectate with glee and judgment. Lauri wants to look "young and attractive" at the conference.
Jo tells Slade about her tennis date with Kim. Kim encouraged Jo to take on a part time job to combat the loneliness. Slades wants Jo to be happy although does not seem keen on the idea.
Kim is going on a girl trip to Palm Spring with her Coto housewife friends. Kim reveals she had a melanoma scare and now lives her life to the fullest. They go to teppanyaki and ask the chef to fling a fish tail into Kim's cleavage, in which he does successfully. They go out clubbing and have a good time. Kim dances with multiple guys and states Scott does not care.
Shane is not going to play for the Oakland A's despite being drafted. As there were a thousand athletes drafted before him. Shane is planning to go to junior college, play for the school in hopes of getting scouted next year. They are taking a college road trip to Arizona, Shane does not want to be in a car with Matt, who is not talkative. Jeana and Shane bicker over the living situation at school. Kara does not want to go. Jeana, Colton, and Shane pick Matt up from the airport and head to Arizona.

Slade decides to ambush a potential client, Brent McElwee, whom he met with in the previous episode. Slade bring his son Grayson and Jo's brother Michael to the equestrian center where Brent is with his family. The ambush went well and Slade brings Jo and Grayson to Brent's to socialize. Jo is intimidated by Brent's affluence. Slade attempts to bring up business and Brent states they are having drinks. Brent's wife Cyndi and Jo make horse riding plans. Slade gets drunk and is condescending toward Jo. On another day, Jo goes horse riding with Cyndi. Jo doesn't care about horses but is there to help facilitate Slade's business deal.
Vicki and Lauri both reinforce house rules to their daughters before leaving for New Orleans. They meet with Vicki's sister Lisa, who also sells insurance. Lauri lost her luggage. Lisa and Vicki are staying at a luxury hotel while Lauri has to pay for the hotel out of her pocket so she has to stay somewhere more affordable. Vicki hopes to ignite Lauri's ambition for insurance at the convention. Lauri is only selling insurance because she needs to support her and the kids. Vicki and Lauri talk about the standing ovation she received for selling $500,000 in new policies poolside. Vicki and Lisa have a passion in long term care insurance because when their father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's their mom had to spend their retirement savings caring for him. Lauri connects with Vicki as her father had suffered a stroke and the cost of caring decimated her family. Lauri and Vicki go out at night, Lauri states she and Vicki had developed a stronger bond, prior to the trip their relationship was strictly business.
The Keoughs minus Kara go on the college tour at Yavapai College. Kara gets an facial, Kara and Matt state in their confessionals Shane does not care about classes. Jeana affirms it as well stating it's all about baseball. Shane has a lot of pressure on him as both his dad and his grandpa both played in major league. Matt's career was cut short as he was hit in the head by a ball during a game and has to undergo surgery. Shane states Matt was happy and personable before the injury but has gone through a 180 since then. Shane is upset at the end of the tryout because he thinks he didn't do well. Yavapai College's coach did not extend a solid offer to Shane right away.
Vicki checks in with Michael over the phone. Michael does not do the promised chores and homework and instead plays with his friends. Ashley invites friends over, Josh calls Ashley from Juvenile Hall and the siblings talk. Ashley throws a party despite Lauri's warning.
Jo goes on a yacht with friends. Slade has boys night with his sons and Jo's brother Michael. Jo calls Slade saying she can't come home yet as she's the designated driver but her friends want to keep partying. Slade wants Jo home and is frustrated.
Yavapai College's coach offered Shane a scholarship, Jeana, Shane, and Kara are choosing between Yavapai College or Santa Ana College. Kara wants Shane to go to Yavapai as that is the better decision. Kara thinks Jeana babies Shane and doesn't want him to go far from home.
Jo got her dream job as a mortgage consultant. Slade was not happy when she relayed the good news. They argue. Jo explains to Slade that she wants to have a career, Slade states Jo initially told him she's willing to be a stay home mom. Slade thinks Jo betrayed him by not including him in the decision and storms off.
